The Perfect Tenses

Perfect Tenses terdiri dari Present Perfect, Past perfect dan Future Perfect. Untuk pelajaran awal di e-kelas.com kita akan membahas Present Perfect.

Present Perfect

Present perfect gives the idea that an action happens before another time or event. Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi terjadi sebelum kejadian (aksi) lain terjadi pada waktu tertentu.

Function

1. Expresses an action that started in the past and continues in the present. Example:

· I have lived in Kisaran since 2011

· She has known him for five years

2. Expresses an action which have done for several times in the past. Example:

· We have played piano ever since we were teenager

· I have cooked ever since I was a teenager

3. Expresses an action in the past but important at once conversation. Example:

· Dina isn’t at home. I think she has gone to somewhere.

· I’m so tired. I have worked all day

Pattern

1. Positive

S (I, You, We, They) + has/have + V-III

S (He, She, It) + has/have + V-III

Example:

· I have already eaten

· Mr.Bowo has stayed since yesterday.

· They have been here.(been merupakan bentuk ketiga dari be)

· I have already eaten. I finished eating sometime before now. The exact time is not important. Saya telah selesai makan (beberapa jam yang lalu).

2. Negative

S + has/have + not + V-III

Example:

· I have not already eaten

· Mr.Bowo hasn’t stayed since yesterday.

· They have not been here.

· I haven’t already eaten

3. Interrogative

Has/have + S + V-III....?

Example:

· Have you already eaten?

· has Mr.Bowo stayed since yesterday?

· have they been here?

· have you already eaten?

All verbs in perfect tense use past participle.

Help - Helped

Wash - Washed

Go - Gone

Sing - Sung

Come - Come

Eat - Eaten

Time Signal

· Once

· Several time

· Lately

· Many times

· Since yesterday

Past Perfect

Past perfect give the idea that an action happens before another time or event in the past.

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi terjadi sebelum kejadian (aksi) lain terjadi pada masa lampau.

Function

1. Expresses a completed action before something in the past. Example:

· I didn’t have money because I had lost my wallet

· I had never seen such a beautiful lady.

2. Expresses an action that started in the past and continued up until another action in the past. Example:

· By the time he finished his job, he had been in here for over 10 years.

· I had lived for 3 years before I moved

Pattern

1. Positive

S + had + V-III

Examples:

· I had already eaten when they arrived

First I finished eating. Later they will arrived. My eating was completely finished before another time in the future. Setelah saya makan mereka tiba dan saya telah menyelesaikan makan saya sebelum mereka datang.

· We had run when they came

· Danu had stayed for ten years here before he got sick

· They had done their job well

· Lia had cooked for dinner

2. Negative

S + had + not + V-III

Examples:

· I had not already eaten when they arrived

· We hadn’t run when they came

· Danu hadn’t stayed for ten years here before he got sick

· They hadn’t done their job well

· Lia hadn’t cooked for dinner

3. Interrogative

had + S + V-III....?

Examples:

· Had you already eaten when they arrived?

· had we run when they came?

· had he stayed for ten years here before he got sick?

· had they done their job well?

· had she cooked for dinner?

Future Perfect

Future perfect give the idea that an action happens before another time or event in the future.

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi terjadi sebelum kejadian (aksi) lain terjadi pada masa yang akan datang.

Function

1. Expresses a completed action before another action or something in the future. Example:

· I will have finished this examination by 1 o’clock

· We will have learned English before studies at London

· I’m going to have received my birthday gift.

2. Expresses an action will happen continue up until another action in the future. Example:

· I’m going to have borrowed her book

· We will have stayed in London

· They will have had my view for a moment

Pattern

1. Positive

S + will/shall have + V-III

Example:

· I will have already eaten when they arrive.

First I will finish eating. Later they will arrive. My eating will be completely finished before another time in the future. Saya akan selesai makan sebelum mereka tiba.

· By this time next week, we will have lived in this house for 2 years.(Minggu depan, kita akan telah tinggal di rumah ini selama 2 tahun)

· The mechanic will have repaired my car tomorrow.(Montir akan telah memperbaiki mobil saya besok)

· We will gather on the road at 8. We will have gone when you come at 9.(Kami akan berkumpul di jalan jam 8. Kami akan telah pergi ketika kamu datang jam 9)

2. Negative

S + will/shall have + not + V-III

Example:

· I will have not already eaten when they arrive

· By this time next week, we will have not lived in this house for 2 years

· The mechanic will have not repaired my car tomorrow

· We will gather on the road at 8. We will have not gone when you come at 9

3. Interrogative

will/shall + S + have + V-III....?

Example:

· Will you have already eaten when they arrive?

· By this time next week, will we have lived in this house for 2 years?

· will the mechanic have repaired my car tomorrow?

· will we have gone when you come at 9?
