Simple Past

Simple Past Tense expresses events or situation at one particular time in the past, this situation happened (it began and ended in the past).

Tense ini untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu kejadian terjadi di masa lampau. Keadian yang dimulai dan diakhiri pada masa lampau

Simple past tense dibentuk dari verb-2 (past tense) atau linking verb “be” (was, were). Verb-2 merupakan bare infinitive (bentuk dasar verb) dengan tambahan –ed atau -d  untuk regular verb atau bentuk yang tidak konsisten pada irregular verb.

The Past Simple with 'be'

1.  Here's how to make the positive:

Pattern:      S + was/were + adjective
·        she was cold
·        you were so tired
·        she was in the garden
·        she was late
·        it was sunny day
·        we were on holiday
·        they were thirsty

1.  To make the negative with 'be', just add 'not':
Pattern:      S + was/were not + adjective

     ·        she was not (wasn’t) cold
·        you were not (weren’t) so tired
·        she wasn’t in the garden
·        she wasn’t late
·        it wasn’t sunny day
·        we weren’t on holiday
·        they weren’t thirsty

2.  Here's how to make the interrogative:

Pattern:      was/were + adjective S

     ·         was she cold?
·         were you so tired?
·         was she in the garden?
·         was she late?
·         was it sunny day?
·         were we on holiday?
·         were they thirsty?

3.  And the 'wh' questions with 'be' (the question word just goes at the beginning, everything else is the same):

     ·        How  was she cold?
·         Why were you so tired?
·         Where was she?
·         Why was she late?
·        When were we on holiday?

     Past Tense with verbs
We make the past simple just like the present simple except we use 'did' instead of  'do / does'. It's really easy because 'did' doesn't change, even with 'he / she / it'.
We usually make the positive by adding '-ed/-d' to the infinitive. For example, 'play' becomes 'played'. However, there are some irregular verbs, for example 'sing' becomes 'sang' and 'run' becomes 'ran'.
The difference between a regular and an irregular verb is the formation of the simple past and past participle. Regular verbs are dependably consistent—the simple past ends in –ed/d as does the past participle. And the irregular isn’t consistent as well.
