Continues Tense

Hello teman-teman, pelajaran di e-kelas.com hari ini adalah progressive tenses atau biasa kita sebut continues tenses. Ada 3 progressive tenses yaitu Present Progressive, Past progressive dan Future Progressive. Mari kita mulai dengan Present Progressive.

Present Continues

Present continues gives the idea that an action is in progress during a particular time. The tense say that an action begins before, is in progress during, and continues after another time or action.

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu

Function of Present Continues

1. expressses an action or activity is going on at this moment. Menggambarkan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung pada saat ini.

Example:

• You are present continues
• You are reading my article
• You are looking for some information in internet

2. expresses an action that is going on during this period of time or. Menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung dalam jangka waktu tertentu atau sebuah tren.

Example:

• Are you still working in the same building with my cousin?
• She is listening bollywood song

3. expresses an action or event in the future, which has already been planned or prepared. Menyatakan kegiatan yang telah direncanakan.

Example:

• We are going to Tebing Tinggi next week
• My sister is visiting us this ‘Idul Fitri’
• He is flying to Padang this Desember

4. Expresses tendencies and trends. Menyatakan suatu kecenderungan atau tren.

Example:

• Our country is getting richer

• The Internet now is becoming less of a novelty

5. express irritation or anger over somebody or something in the present with adverbs such as: always, continually or contantly. Menyatakan rasa marah terhadap seseorang.

Example:

• They are continually complaining about the service!
• He is always asking me stupid questions!
• She is contantly critising my appearence!

Pattern

1. Positive

S + to be + V-Ing

Examples:

• I am reading book now

• I am meeting some friends after work

• I am going to the party tonight

• We are staring at the star

• He is waiting someone

• They are trying to take it back

2. Negative

S + to be + not + V-Ing

Examples:

• I am not reading book now

• He isn’t riding his motorcycle

• I am not going to the party tonight

• We aren’t sleeping at home

• He isn’t typing the letter
• They aren’t playing football at the yield

3. Interrogative

To be + S + V-Ing.......?

Examples:

• Are you reading book?
• Is he riding his motorcycle?
• Are you going to the party tonight?
• Are we sleeping at home?
• Is he typing the letter?
• are they playing football at the yield?

Time Signal

• Now
• At this time
• Today
• this month, this year, this second, this century.

Verb + -ing

• read – reading

• Cook – cooking

• watch – watching

• wash – washing

• study – studying

• fly – flying

Here’s the second, ini dia yang kedua setelah Present Continues yaitu Past Continues

Past Continues

Past continues gives the idea that an action is in progress during a particular time in the past.

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Aksi tersebut telah dimulai tapi belum selesai pada saat itu.

Function of Past Continues

1. expresses an unfinished action that was interrupted by another action or event. Menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung tapi terhenti karena adanya kegiatan lain dimasa lampau.

Example:

• I was cooking dinner when my grandma came
• The car is repairing when the owner came

2. Used in a story written in the past tense.

Example:

‘the sun was shining and the birds were singing beautifully when Cindelaras walked around the jungle. She played with all animals in the jungle......’

Pattern

1. Positive

S + to be past (was, were) +V-Ing

Examples:

• They were sleeping when she arrived

They slept at 20.00 last night. She arrived at 21.00. They were still asleep. His sleep began before and was in progress at particular time in the past. It probably continued.

(tidur mereka dimulai sebelum dia tiba, pada saat dia tiba mereka masih tidur dan mungkin akan tidur untuk beberapa jam kedepan)

• While they were walking down the street it began to rain
• I was reading a novel at 8 o’clock last night
• Last month at this time I was attending school
• I didn’t hear anything because I was sleeping

2. Negative

S + to be past (was, were) + not +V-Ing

Examples:

• They were not sleeping when she arrived.
• they weren’t standing outside While it began to rain
• I wasn’t reading a novel at 8 o’clock last night
• Last month at this time I wasn’t attending my friend’s wedding party
• I heard anything because I wasn’t sleeping

3. Interrogative

To be past (was, were)+ S + V-Ing.....?

Examples:

• Were they sleeping when she arrived ?
• were they standing outside ?
• was she reading a novel at 8 o’clock last night?
• Last month at this time were you attending your friend’s wedding party?
• Were you sleeping outside?

Ini dia yang terakhir, setelah kita menguasai Present Progressive dan Past Progressive mari kita tuntaskan dengan Future Perfect.

Future Continues

Future continues give the idea that an action is in progress during a particular time in the future. Use the Future Progressive to indicate that a longer action in the future will be interrupted by a shorter action in the future. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa yang akan datang.

Pattern

1. Positive

S + will be +V-Ing

Examples:

• They will be sleeping when we arrived.

They will go to sleep at 20.00 tomorrow night. We will arrived at 21.00. They sleep will begin before we arrive and it will be in progress at particular time in the future. Probably they sleep will continue.

(mereka akan pergi tidur pukul 20.00 esok malam. Dan kami akan tiba pada pukul 21.00 esok malam). Mereka akan mulai pergi tidur sebelum kami tiba. Dan pada saat kami tiba mungkin mereka belum bangun).

• At midnight tonight, we will still be driving through the desert.
• She will be cooking when we arrived
• They will be staring at the star when my sister read

2. Negative

S + will + not + be + V-Ing

Examples:

• They will not be sleeping when we arrived.
• At midnight tonight, we won’t still be driving through the desert.
• She won’t be cooking when we arrived
• They won’t be staring at the star when my sister read

3. Interrogative

will+ S + be + V-Ing.....?

Examples:

• Will they be sleeping when we arrived ?
• Will she be singing when I came?
• Will you be drinking when we ate.
